Why we love The Dream Cafe

A highlight of our recent spring tour was our stop at Penticton’s Dream Cafe (http://www.thedreamcafe.ca/) hosted by the inimitable Pierre and Debra.  Over the years they have presented a roster of exceptional artists, including Judy Collins no less.  Obviously touring entertainers are eager to present a show here. Why? What is it that makes the venue work so well?

It is their framework for supporting the performance.  The logistics of everything from audience placement, lighting, sound, even staff clothing and activity are designed to anticipate and showcase the performance.  Even the funky, warm atmosphere contributes to the venue’s intimacy.

In return for bringing such high calibre artists to Penticton, the community holds a high degree of trust in Pierre’s ability to bring in quality acts.  When passing through Penticton, make a stop at the Dream Cafe.  You won’t regret it.

Lethbridge Folk Club and Lavender

Willy Blizzard has been out in Southern Alberta and BC playing music and meeting some amazing people along the way.  The faithful old truck took us through stunning springtime scenery in the Rocky Mountains.  Rivers were getting higher and trees were in their first blush. We were privileged to feature at the Lethbridge Folk Club in a wonderful venue called the Wolf’s Den. Of course, the historic Auditorium Hotel in Nanton brings its own framework of hilarity.  We inadvertently left our stage banner behind in Nanton, not unusual for a band on the run.

On our way back through the central Okanagan, we stopped at a beautiful lavender farm. The gracious host, Andrea McFadden, explained the history and workings of their family property (www.okanaganlavender.com). We grabbed a few sprigs of lavender to hang in the van to offset the stench of touring musicians.

The Byrds Without A Rickenbacker

Who remembers these?  No, its not a Rickenbacker.  It’s a vintage Danelectro Electric 12 string.  We’re enjoying the sound of our new-to-us vintage style electric guitar.  Found it on Craig’s List.  Originally a little hesitant about something that’s made from plywood, we’ve come to really enjoy the folk-rock sound this instrument gives.  Oddly, we’re even stating a preference for its sound over the classic Rickenbacker 12 string which was such an identifiable feature of the music we love.
